Prior to the commencement of the match, Hungary stood as the sole World Cup final participant to have suffered a defeat of seven goals or more in a single game, with such devastating losses having transpired exclusively away from home: Germany triumphed over Hungary by a score of 7-0 in Cologne during 1941, while the Netherlands secured an 8-1 victory against Hungary in Amsterdam in 2013.
